History Learning in Year 1 & Year 2

Thank you to Kate Cashel for coming into Year 1 and Year 2 this week as a guest speaker for our History unit Year 1 & 2 Guest Speaker – The Past in the Present. The children have been learning about Sydney Harbour Bridge’s history. Kate’s Great Great Grandfather William Steel was a carpenter from Dee Why, that helped build Sydney Harbour Bridge over the eight years of construction. The bridge was finished and opened 19th March, 1932. We were astounded to find out that children also helped build the Harbour Bridge, their job was to throw the rivets up to the workers. There were more than 6 million rivets used. The children enjoyed learning about “The Coathanger’s” history especially from one of our own families that have a special connection to the bridge!
